Shark attack kills Australian surfer off Long Reef Beach, Sydney

Around 10:00 a.m. local time (0000 UTC) Saturday, an Australian man died after being attacked by a shark while surfing at Long Reef in the Northern Beaches region of Sydney.

Police said the shark was believed to have been large.

According to UPI, the victim lost both legs in the attack and died at the scene.

The New South Wales Police Force said in a statement, “Two sections of a surfboard have been recovered and taken for expert examination.” Authorities said they were working to identify the species of shark involved in the incident.

UPI, citing the Sydney Morning Herald, reported that the man was identified as Mercury Psillakis, 57.

Police said that beaches between Manly and Narrabeen were closed to the public as a precaution.
