On Tuesday, Wikinews attended a Veterans Day event in New Chapel Hill, Texas. 21 military veterans and one active member of the Army National Guard were honored at the event, while they were seated on the stage. As each military branch was named, the respective members from that branch stood to applause. Roughly 480 people attended the ceremony. The event was held to honor veterans and current US military members. In the US, the holiday is a time to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Observed each year on November 11, it began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. The US holiday recognizes veterans from all branches and eras, thanking them for their sacrifice, courage, and dedication. Communities across Texas held ceremonies, parades, and moments of silence to show appreciation. It’s also a day to reflect on the freedoms protected by their service and to offer support to those who continue to carry the burdens of duty.
The school’s band played the theme for each of the five military branches while students displayed the flags of each branch. Flags displayed were for the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Veterans for all branches except the Coast Guard were present on stage. The school’s band director, a veteran of the US Marine Corps, gave a brief address to those gathered.
