Current New York Police Department commissioner agrees to stay on for Mamdani’s mayoralty

Thursday, November 20, 2025

On Wednesday, New York Police Department commissioner Jessica Tisch released a statement announcing her acceptance of mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani‘s offer for her to keep her role in his administration.

During the mayoral election, all three major candidates expressed their desire to keep Jessica Tisch. Mamdani faced criticism during his campaign for comments he had made in the past advocating for defunding the police.

The outgoing mayor, Eric Adams, praised Mamdani’s decision, saying that “In choosing her to stay on as police commissioner, Mayor-elect Mamdani is recognizing our public-safety efforts were right and that they will continue into the future.” The Justice Committee, a police reform group, derided Mamdani’s decision as “a rebuff of his promises to New Yorkers.”
